Many Complaints Lead Jokowi to Allow Religious Organizations to Manage Mining Operations

Langgam Pos - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has revealed the reasons behind granting Special Mining Business Permit Areas (WIUPK) to religious organizations. He admitted receiving numerous complaints due to the fact that mining operations had traditionally been allocated only to large corporations.

Jokowi explained that the decision to allow religious organizations to manage mines came after consultations at Islamic boarding schools (Ponpes). The rationale was to promote economic equity and fairness.

“There were many complaints directed at me, asking why mining operations were only given to big companies. They said, ‘We would also be capable if given the opportunity.’ When I visited the boarding schools and engaged in dialogue at mosques, this motivated us to create regulations to allow religious organizations to have a chance to manage mining operations as well,” Jokowi told reporters at the Batang Integrated Industrial Area on Friday (July 26, 2024).

Jokowi emphasized that it is not the religious organizations themselves that will manage the mining operations, but rather the business entities owned by these organizations, such as cooperatives, limited liability companies (PT), or partnerships (CV).

Moreover, Jokowi stated that the government is not forcing all religious organizations to accept this opportunity. The government will only facilitate those interested.

“We do not intend to impose or pressure religious organizations to apply for this. If they are interested and willing, the regulations are already in place,” said Jokowi.

The policy to allocate mining land to religious organizations is outlined in Government Regulation (PP) No. 25 of 2024. The land allocated is limited to the reduction of land from the Coal Mining Business Agreement (PKP2B).

This policy is further reinforced by Presidential Regulation (Perpres) No. 76 of 2024, which amends Presidential Regulation No. 70 of 2023 on Land Allocation for Investment Management, issued by Jokowi on July 22, 2024.
