What is the Golden Visa Launched by Jokowi and Who is Eligible?

Langgam Pos - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has officially launched the Golden Visa. What exactly is the Golden Visa and who is eligible to receive it?

The Golden Visa grants foreign nationals permission to stay in Indonesia for a period ranging from 5 to 10 years. This visa targets foreigners who are expected to contribute positively to the Indonesian economy.

President Joko Widodo officially introduced the Golden Visa on Thursday (July 25). Jokowi stated that the Indonesian government aims to facilitate foreign nationals in investing and contributing to Indonesia.

The targeted foreign nationals include high-profile individuals, investors, and others.

"We are launching the Golden Visa to make it easier for foreigners to invest and work in Indonesia and to attract more high-quality travelers," said Jokowi during the Golden Visa launch at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, South Jakarta, on Thursday (July 25, 2024).

One of the first recipients of the Golden Visa is Shin Tae Yong. Jokowi symbolically awarded the Golden Visa to Indonesian national football team coach Shin Tae Yong.

The Indonesian government has not set a limit on the number of foreigners who can receive the Golden Visa. However, Jokowi emphasized that immigration authorities must be stringent in their selection of Golden Visa recipients. It is crucial that no individuals who might threaten national security are granted this visa.

"Make sure not to let in people who could endanger national security," Jokowi stated.

"Remember, this is only for high-quality travelers, so we must be very selective, thoroughly vet them, and closely examine their contributions," he added.

The Golden Visa is part of efforts to boost the country's economic development by allowing foreign investors who invest in Indonesia to stay for 5-10 years.

Jokowi hopes that news about the Golden Visa for high-quality foreigners will be widely disseminated so that investors can enjoy easier investment opportunities.

"Disseminate and socialize it immediately, do it widely through various channels," he concluded.

Previously, Samuel Altman, the Chief Executive Officer of OpenAI, became the first foreigner to receive the Indonesian Golden Visa following its enactment in late August 2023. He received a Golden Visa under the global figure subcategory.

"Altman received a 10-year residency permit signed by the Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim," said Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim.

These 10 Countries Are the Priority for Indonesian Golden Visa

The Indonesian government aims to issue Golden Visas to 1,000 foreign nationals. Which 10 countries are prioritized for the Golden Visa?

Director General of Immigration at the Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Silmy Karim, mentioned that there are 10 countries whose citizens are prioritized for the newly introduced Golden Visa. Singapore and Japan are among these priority countries.

"I am realistic about the top 10 countries based on investment data from BKPM, as we always cooperate with the Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and the Ministry of Investment. The countries include Singapore, Japan, China, South Korea, the Netherlands, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and the United Arab Emirates," said Silmy at the Ritz Carlton Hotel, Jakarta, on Thursday (July 25, 2024).

Evaluation of the Golden Visa implementation will be conducted every three months to ensure that Indonesia attracts high-quality foreigners.

"Evaluation will focus on results, not just revoking the visa, because revoking is easy. For instance, if they do not meet the requirements, the visa can be revoked, but this is part of a strategy to attract high-quality travelers who ultimately benefit Indonesia," Silmy explained.

Previously, President Jokowi had warned against issuing Golden Visas to unsuitable individuals. He expressed concerns about people who might pose a threat to national security.

"Make sure not to let in people who could endanger national security," Jokowi reiterated.

Jokowi also emphasized that the Golden Visa should not allow foreigners who do not benefit Indonesia. Those receiving the Golden Visa must undergo rigorous selection.

"Remember, this is only for high-quality travelers, so it must be very selective, thoroughly vetted, and their contributions must be closely examined," he added.
