"I think the world has learned a lot from how autonomous vehicles were rolled out," Goldstein observed, noting that the FAA’s pilot initiative gives developers the flexibility to test their aircraft incrementally.
"This program gives the eVTOL industry the ability to launch in a few cities within limited geographic areas so we can work through any friction points in the system," he added.
Paving the Way for the Return of Supersonic Flight
Beyond urban air mobility, the FAA is setting its sights on resurrecting commercial supersonic air travel.
In June 2026, the agency issued the first of two required regulatory proposals aimed at overturning the long-standing ban on overland supersonic flight—a restriction originally enacted back in 1973. The upcoming second proposal will establish clear, acceptable noise thresholds for aircraft during takeoff, landing, and supersonic cruise speeds. The FAA expects to finalized both sets of regulations by mid-2027.
"We felt those rules were old and outdated," Rocheleau remarked regarding the decades-old ban.
The era of regular commercial supersonic transport came to an end in 2003 when Concorde jets, operated by Air France and British Airways, were retired after 27 years of service.
